HILL WALKING

As an occupier of accommodation at Ellary or Castle Sween you should think of the land as yours to wander into as far as you want to go. Here is a gold-mine for the enthusiastic hill walker with trails to the high tops and their fantastic views, and hundreds of fascinating glens and corries to be discovered. People who have walked these hills for years still find places which they had not known even existed. One of the most attractive aspects of the hills of Ellary and Castle Sween is that while they provide more than enough scope for the energetic hill walker, at the same time less energetic people can take an easier route and find exactly the same degree of fascination. It is sometimes interesting to take a walk which follows an old road or track, and some of these can be traced quite far out into the hills. There is normally little danger of getting lost as one is nearly always in sight of the sea. More convenient for people staying on the Loch Sween side are the various walks starting from Balliemore (five minutes beyond Castle Sween) along the private road to Ellary, across to Stronefield Beach or out to the Point of Knap. But there is no need to keep to these paths, and once you are on the hills you can go wherever you please. If you are interested in geology you should bring your hammer and rucksack with you as the area also has special interest for geologists. Many universities send parties of students on special study projects, and for quite a few of our regular customers their first introduction to Ellary and Castle Sween was as a geology student on a special study project.
